Salmor’s achievements in telecommunications has recently been recognised when they won a prestigious British Telecommunications plc (BT) Supplier Innovation Award for best innovation idea leading to reduced costs.

The awards scheme was launched by BT in June of this year to encourage their suppliers to bring forward ideas and innovations that would benefit BT, its customers and the wider world.  Over 130 suppliers (including Motorola, 3M, Unisys and Hewlett Packard) entered the scheme and the judges subsequently reduced this number to a strong field of 29 finalists vying for the 6 award categories.

One entry featured the Salmor Modular Joint Box (MJB) as it offers BT reduced build costs, increased competiveness, improved customer service, a significantly reduced carbon footprint and health and safety improvements when compared to the traditional brick built and concrete footway joint boxes.

The oldest identified drawing for BT footway joint boxes dates back to 1904 and the technology involved in their construction has not really changed for over a century.  The traditional chambers were largely fit for purpose but they also generated a number of issues.  These included quality of construction, poor dimensional control, length of build period, protection of the public during the construction period and cost.

The Modular Joint Box (MJB) is a pre formed, structural twin wall, plastic ring system (150 mm deep) which can be stacked to the required chamber depth.  It can also be installed by unskilled labour during a single visit to site in approximately one hour.  The MJB is available in a range of sizes, does not require the use of concrete or mortar during installation and its simplicity guarantees a consistently high build quality.
